What is a concussion?
A concussion is a mild brain injury that changes the way your brain normally works and can affect your thinking, mood, sleep and can cause physical symptoms. Concussions can occur from a fall or a blow to your body that causes your head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This fast movement can cause your brain to bounce around or twist in your skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.
Why is it important to see a provider if you’ve had a concussion?
While most concussions are relatively mild, some may be a more serious brain injury. Most concussions improve within days to weeks. Unfortunately, some can have a longer lasting impact and you can develop complications. To minimize complications, head injuries should always be assessed and treated as soon as possible.
